Any tips about donating hair for Locks of Love?

?L?ur?n? asked:

Next month I’ll be cutting off 10 inches for Locks of Love. Does anyone have any suggestions from previous experiences about sending the hair or what to tell the hairdresser? Thanks!

Its just a little weird because they measure ten inches, put your hair in a ponytail, and cut the pony tail. It freaked me out a little lol.

The hair has to be totally virgin, did you know that? I can never have been permed or dyed. Very few people have hair that quailifies.

say to the hair dresser, ‘im cutting my hair for locks of love so do the minimum amount of inches cut off please.’ good for you! i wish i had the courage to do that but, im kinda selfish when it comes to my hair. this kid at my school, he grew his hair really long and then got it cut, and i think hes doing it again this year. its a really neat thing =]

Make sure there is a good 10 inches, make sure it is clean, and cut straight across. Put a pony tail holder on it before you cut. It can’t have any gray, and should not be colored or chemically altered in any way.

Most of the hair for locks for love thrown away because it does not meet the criteria above, and then a good percentage is actually sold to support the program. It is still a great program though, and you are doing a good thing.

Make sure your hair isn’t dyed. I don’t think they can use dyed hair. Just call your hairdresser and ask. I lot of them will just cut your hair and send it where it needs to go.

all you have to do is tell them you are donating, they will cut off the right amount, then you tell them how you want the rest of your hair styled…its that easy!

they will only except 12 inches

First, they measure out the amount that you want to be cut off and donated.

They put it into a ponytail, and cut off the ponytail.

After that, you just ask them to cut it however you want it after that

PS-Your hair can’t be permed, dyed, highlighted, etc.

    Hope I helped!

Do not do it if has been dyed or chemically striaghtened! I know you want to do a great thing but it will be a waste Jen -

make sure that your hair is long enough so that when you get 10 inches off you still have enough left!!!

i am a hairstylist and have cut many clients for Locks…. shampoo and condition your hair first (either at home or by your stylist) put it in a pony tail.. make sure it is measured correctly and then i cut at least1/2 to 1 inch ABOVE the band holding the hair in place .. this will leave you with a nice lock af hair to donate.. WTG that is VERY considerste af you to do this

go to locksoflove.org their website tells everything you need to know about donating and even has a video.

They’ll take any hair you send them… If it is poor condition or bleached, gray, etc. they will just sell it.

Keep in mind they don’t give their wigs away for free unless you qualify for it financially. Everyone else pays on a sliding scale. They don’t do real hair wigs for short term hair loss (most commonly associated with cancer) – only synthetic wigs. The only do real hair wigs for long-term hair loss, kids age 6-18.

All this and more can be found on their website:

make sure you have enough hair where it will look cute when cute off ohh and go to a salon to get it done dont do it at home

  17. lizzgrayy - May 30th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Some salons do the cut for free if you are doing it for Locks of Love. I would let that person know how you want to donate your hair. I also hope you have an idea of how you want your hair to look afterward. Communication with your stylist will help get the results you want. Know what you want before you cut it.

i did that in 4th grade and what they do is put your hair in a ponytail and then they cut it off…I know it was for a good cause but now i sort of wish i wouldn’t of done it because now my hair takes forever to grow back out…It sort of sux. OH and depending on where you go they might do it for free…that’s what i did…umm some places it has to be 12 inches and others it’s 10 but umm…..ya…great clips it only has to be 10…ya.
