How and why do atheists get married when marriage is religious?
Anthony B asked:
Marriage was ordained by God in Genesis. Why do atheists get married when they don’t believe in God who created the union and sacrament of marriage?

I love to celebrate the Christmas holiday even though everyone knows that Jesus is nothing more than a character in a fairy tale and that the christian mind control cult stole the celebration from the so called pagans. In fact, pretty much every major aspect of the christian mind control cult was taken from these “pagan” cults that predate the christian cult by hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The virginal birth, the death, the resurrection, and even your beloved cross, ALL stolen from the pagans and incorporated into the christian mind control cult to make it easier to indoctrinate people into the cult.

First of all, the Bible does not ordain marriage. It suggests that a man and a woman stay together for their whole lives, but that’s it. It says nothing at all about promising it in front of some sort of official before having sex.
Secondly, marriage has social benefits (everyone knows you’re together), and fiscal benefits.
And thirdly, atheists are probably overrepresented in couples living together unmarried.

It’s more about being recognized by the state. It’s political not religious. And it represents union, a bond, commitment. You dont have to be religious for that.

Marriage is not religious, you can get married in a courthouse by a judge and then you get all sorts of tax and legal benefits, especially if you want children. Marriage was created by men, and has changed over human history, and now this is the place where it is, and it makes perfect sense for atheists to consider doing it.

marriage isn’t religious. The licenses and recognitions are entirely secular. You can choose a religious officiant and ceremony if you like, but don;t have to.
Oh and read that Bible of yours and you’ll see marriage was far different back then, including polygamy, incest, and underage brides with nary a church or minister in sight.

You are mistaken.
Marriage is not religious. Marriage is legal, and recognized by the government and conveys certain rights as far as inheritance, taxes are concerned.
People cannot get married by any officiant legally, unless that officiant is registered and licensed by the state to perform marriages. No gods required.

Your assumption is that marriage is religious. That may be true for you. However to be legal, a marriage must be legally registered by the government – most probably county government. This would be impossible if marriage were religious – there is a constitutionally mandated separation of church and state.

Or is it that you just want to upset everyone that isn`t in your club, cult or whatever it is you call yourelves these days.
Marriage is the civil bonding of a couple and was so long before your god was even thought of.

Marriage is a LEGAL contract. That is why we get the license from city hall and gays need to change the laws to gain the legal right to marry.
If marriage, in your assessment, is religious, why do those wishing divorce go to court rather than church?

Maybe it’s because marriage isn’t religious and it’s only the Christians that seem to believe so?
Getting married implies certain legal rights on you and your spouse and doesn’t have to take place in a church. In fact the church wedding is just a ceremony, you need to have the necessary forms filled out and signed at your local city hall to be married.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but marriage is a social institution that pre-dates your religion.
Christians get married, but Marriage is not Christian. People all over the world get married, regardless of their religious beliefs.
I am getting married next month. We have an atheist performing the ceremony. By the laws of our country, this will be a legal marriage. What your Bible has to say about it is completely immaterial.

Marriage has been around since well before Moses’s time. It used to be known as handfasting, was primarily a fertility ceremony intended to help with having children and lasted only “as long as love shall last between ye both”.
Atheists get married today in civil ceremonies, for the (undeserved) privileged legal status that it confers; and the day that all co-habitating couples get exactly the same rights as married couples will see fewer marriages.

Where did you ever get the idea that marriage was religious–marriage was an institution defined as the union of a man and a women before hebrew was even a written language. Marriage is a societal function much like any other laws.

For most of history marriage was a civil or family occasion, that included Palestine at the time Jesus was supposed to be around. Religion only made marriage a sacrament during the middle ages, it was only after 1554 that the church became involved. Do some research before you ask this sort of question.

Wrong, but thanks for playing! Marriaghe pre-existed your cult, my friend. Marriage is currently a legal contract, with certain benefits. Pagans were marrying before your god, and we do so today, still. In addition, 1/3 of all marriages in this country are performed by Justices of the Peace in civil ceremonies, that do not include nor require your god.
How does that make you feel?

In the U.S. – and many other countries – marriage is not just “religious” – but legal as well. If you don’t think so – try filing as married on your tax return – when you don’t have a marriage license.
Maybe they are just doing the LEGAL part – and the LOVE part (and in my opinion god IS love) – but they don’t want to have anything to do with the religious part of marriage.
Please – if there is no LEGAL aspect on it – then why are the right wingers in California using a legal route to ban gay marriage.
It’s all about legality. You can’t have it both ways.
If marriage were simply religious and not legal – why would any of the churches who oppose gay marriage – be concerned about gays getting married?

marriage was never religious. even in the bible itself marriage is described only 3 times, twice as a financial transaction and once as sex, that is when 2 people have sex that makes them married.
there is nothing religious about any of those exchanges.
