How does a woman propose marriage to a man?

I was thinking about doing this since my boyfriend has been talking about marriage. He has yet to propose though. If he doesn’t propose by New Year’s Day, I plan on proposing to him. My question is: Is it customary for the woman to buy the man an engagement ring or some other piece of jewelery? If the engagement ring is customary, will he still wear it once we’re married, next to his wedding band or will the engagement ring serve as a wedding band? Aaaggghh, I’m so confused. Help!!!

As much as you want to propose, you might be killing his plans of proposing to you. Knock hints instead, or be direct and say what you want but let him propose cos most guys would want to tell (boast to) their friends about it later. Usually women don’t buy any jewellery for a man for a proposal. And after marriage, the engagement ring is usually kept and the wedding one used. Have you thought of a necklace with an engraving on it if he really doesn’t get the hint on new years?
