How far away is Iowa from legalizing *** marriage?

Healthy Person asked:

There’s a court case going on there that has been in progress for 3 years already and they say it might take another year to get a ruling.

That sounds odd: a 4-year-court case?

Anyway, do you see *** marriage being realistically legal in Iowa in the next year or two?

Court cases can go on forever. It’s possible in the next year or two, it simply depends on how the court case turns out. From what I understand, it’s been progressing in our favor.

Iowa’s Supreme Court heard the court arguments in December, 2008 so the ruling should happen sometime in 2009.

Court cases being heard on appeal can take some time, especially if they may set a new precedent, due to the time to prepare the legal briefs as well as amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs from interested parties that may support one side or the other.
