Actually, most important court cases these days last that long. They start in a lower court, they get appealed to an appellate court, and then finally to the supreme court. Pre-trial negotiating, discovery, trial, yada yada yada. Four years is not at all unusual.

So far, the only courts that have struck down laws against same-sex marriage have been in solidly “blue” states, which Iowa is not.
So my answer to your question is, probably a long way indeed.
