Is America a true melting pot?
Americans today proudly describe their nation as a “melting pot”. This is largely attributed to the increase in *********** marriages and the ousting of the U.S. Supreme Court laws banning racial intermarriage in 1967. And with most universities integrating students from diverse nationalities, seems like the universities are putting much effort in doing away with those wicked seeds of racism and prejudice.
Hoooow-ever, *********** relationships are still among the most psychoanalyzed topics. Society still frowns on *********** marriages… describing them as relationships pegged on the lure of the exotic, as opposed to accepting them as relationships based on love and compatibility.
Stereotypes about *********** couples… especially black and white… never cease (black men perceive white women as trophies… black women marrying white men for social acceptance.)
We all are aware of certain inherent problems with *********** dating. For those dating interracially, would you still consider our America to be a “melting pot” if all you get when walking hand in hand with your spouse are some comic, surprising, and sometimes even vulgar reactions?
Correct me if am wrong but… much as we have come a long way, I think the society is still not completely mature to accept *********** dating. This is all because of ****** and sexist stereotyping (the black man as the ultimate male sexual fantasy and Asian women as exotic and ********** sexpots). Such inaccurate and harmful stereotypes have for a long time been influencing people’s dating habits … encouraging feelings of anxiety, inadequacy, out casting or stigmatizing certain races and ethnicities and thereby escalating resentment and animosity toward *********** dating.
Even though there have been success stories about people from diverse, and sometimes antagonistic worlds defying cultural bigotry and get married, the idea of turning America into a fully fledged “melting pot” isn’t sitting well with many.
Take *********** dating for instance… it seems somehow to be connected to immoral sexual acts. Ever tried searching on the Internet for ‘interracial dating’ or similar search phrases? Many a times a list of pornography sites will come up, featuring *** between black men and white women. Apparently, when *********** dating is appalling to some, it is erotically stimulating for others. Strange “melting pot” huh!
Truth is such self-professed critics do not comprehend the soul-searching that goes into making an *********** relationship work. *********** couples deal with far greater challenges than ‘regular couples’. *********** Dating to say the least can be difficult. And the people who aren’t doing it mostly cause this difficulty.
Why impose your beliefs, ways of life and ignorance upon those who are free enough to date people from other cultures. Why do other people keep dragging other Americans behind in their quest to make the world one big happy family?

I truly believe the United States is a melting pot, or at least a majority of it (I can’t speak for some certain states or certain counties that still seem to be very small-minded when it comes to diversity in their own areas). I live in California, and that state in itself is heavily a melting pot- *********** couples and multi-racial children are everywhere, and they are generally accepted.
But that is not to say that ignorance, bigotry, and racism DON’T exist- but compared to the other places I have been in outside of America, there are countries that are at least 10x worse when it comes to environments that harshly judge people by their skin color (at least, in America, we have laws that protect us and/or defend us when it comes this type of harassment). It’s a blessing that *********** marriage is no longer illegal BUT-
The war isn’t over, though- we should keep on fighting- by educating people, that is.

There was a wonderful book written in the early 1970’s, maybe, called “Cracks in the Melting Pot.” I can buy the idea that America is a melting pot with cracks in it.

your yard stick of measuring america’s melting pot qualification is very narrow. There are many aspects of a melting pot society other than inter racial relationships (which is a significant part but by no means the only quality of a melting pot society). My broader definition of a melting pot is multiracial presence in all segments of society, immigration, open international trade. That was ancient venice and alot of the coastal areas that benefitted from a melting pot society. I am in an inter racial relationship and i only encounter stereotyping behavior once in a blue moon. So that tells me that you may be associating with a biased area of society or that you are reflecting your personal bias on others ie thinking that when they look at you they are thinking what you think they are thinking. I am open to an arguement that america is not a true melting pot but yours is not well substantiated

If America was the true melting pot, we wouldn’t be calling ourselves African Americans, Italian Americans, Chinese, Japanese, etc.
We would all be just Americans!!

I am going to say no, if anyplace is a melting pot I would say the UK is. They don’t seem to care about race over there. As a black woman I have many black men calling me all kinds of deragatory names, but I get most of the backlash from black women and white women. Black women always act as if I have offended them in some way by dating a white man. My thinking is they should be happy it’s less competition for them. Especially since moving to Central FL, the black women here will completely ostracize you if they know you are dating a white man. I have had a black co-worker (female) bring her male cousins to my job to disrespect me, then threaten to verbally assault me because they were all offended that I’m dating a white man. I had to go through hell and high water to have her fired for harrasment. She was later fired for sexual harrasment.
So all in all, I have to say that here in 2007 no America is not the melting pot. Politicians & other’s may like to define America as such but I would say “You can call yourself a Chevy and park yourself in a garage, it still won’t make you a Chevy”!

I think that america is a melting pot. it’s just the people that people that make it bad. Every country is a sort of melting pot. i do agree that IR’s are still a big issue this day and age. It’s really sad that it is. People have a lot of times on their hands to worry about it. The stereotypes are bad and they make me sick. They are just jealous. I date IR and I get the stereotypes from both black men and black women. I dont pay them any mind, though.

Hi Phil,
I don’t know exactly how to answer your question without sounding ****** but I believe that two people should marry if they love each other regardless of race and/or skin color. We are all connected. As far as America being a melting pot, I love America and this country is beautiful but the First Nation People were miserably invaded and it has become a melting pot at the expense of First Nation People. I hope that someday this country will be returned to First Nation People. Please visit my website at.
