Is the argument over *** marriage about rights or terminology?
ahzembiq asked:
In California there is the ongoing debate about Prop 8 and a ban on *** marriage. I’m a bit confused on some of the details. Is the non-hetero community trying to get legal rights which are not currently available to them, in the form of forming a legally recognized union (whatever it may be called) between two people?

Or is this about having the right to refer to legally recognized unions between non-hetero partners as “marriage”?

I don’t know anymore, maybe both.
A lot of people I have talked to think that people with civil unions are given the same right as people who are married and are making a big deal out of nothing. VERY untrue.
Some people just plainly think having gays married will bring the whole world down into a pit of hell or some other kind of bible mumbo-jumbo.

Terminology. Americans (most americans) Believe that gays should have Equal & same rights as Straight married couples. They just want you to call it Marriage
EDIT: Obama plans to make EVERYTHING equal between civil unions & straight marriage…. It just wont be called “marriage” for gays

Don’t be confused: it is most definitely about rights. Inheritance, benefits, medical directive and property rights are just a few at stake.
Without express legal documents drawn to indicate otherwise, these decisions are relegated to the next of kin (who may be estranged from the parties concerned) or the state in the absence of blood relatives.
Feel free to call your union what you want, but without the ability claim these and other rights, gays and ******** are de facto second class citizens.

marriage
it is about terminology, but it is also still a fight for equality. by not saying yes, you are married, you are saying, you still can’t get married. It is partially about the financial rights of *** couples, but it is also the status rights. by not calling it marriage, it is still saying you aren’t good enough to get married, you are infurior to heterosexual couples. What most people are not thinking about is that stupid marriage has been changed a million times for many things. It used to be a bargaining agreement, and a way for the man to have everything that the woman had. they just need to grow up and stop disguising their prejudice behind their religion and their definition of marriage.

Personally, I argue both.
I want to have the same rights as a man and woman and in love have. To get the benefits of marriage, to have the rights of visitation, to have the same opportunities and treatment.
As for the terminology, people get married. That’s how it’s been since as long as any of us can remember. When two people are in love they show it to the world by the union of marriage. “Same *** Unions” are similar to the times after the Civil War. It’s seperate but equal, and that translates to unequal and unfair.
I want equal, and I want fair. I don’t want a bunch of bullshit.

What I don’t get is why heterosexuals were quick to claim they must defend marriage from being used by *** couples yet the reality is they are abandoning it in droves. Now days children in single parent families is the norm.
Why do they defend something they them self are out to destroy.
