You must stop and think very carefully my friend. Does this plan sound like it is going to work to you?

Before you get married, you should have her contact the Japanese consulate and start all paperwork for your visa to Japan. As far as work for an engineer that cannot speak Japanese, it depends on where you will live. Tokyo probably has the best chances to find work in a company. If you live in the inaka, you will not find much of anything. Start learning Japanese, with a Japanese wife you have a chance to practice. Never give up.

Do her a favor, don’t get married…Anyone who says “wanna” will be laughed at. The chances of your getting a job in Japan are less than zero. Your English is poor, and you know no Japanese. Where could you work ?

i suggest getting your girlfriend to ring japan about certain types of paperwork needed. as to getting a job over here, it depends on where you are living yes, but if you have an understanding of english, as not everyones english is perfect over here, you should be able to find something. i suggest doing a job search on the internet as to what you work force you want to be in and see how close to your new city there is work…after living here a little while you will begin to pick up japanese pretty quickly. i have been here 3 months and i am almost fluent

You have to register the marriage through the Japanese embassy in Colombia – see – just call them and they will send you the forms.

Basically, she has two records on file with the government in Japan–a “koseki” which contains her whole family, and a “juminhyo” which contains just her. When you register the marriage, you should be recorded as a “remark” on both.

Note that as a foreigner, you can’t be properly recorded as her husband in Japan, which might create some problems for you later on. Check out this website:

As for working, as long as you know English you might be able to find an engineering job–there are quite a few people working as engineers in Japan who don’t speak Japanese. The pay will not be great but you will have something to do. There are also pretty big communities of Spanish speakers in many cities, mainly Peruvians with Japanese ancestry, who might be able to help you find something.
