What if the government did away with marriage?

Steve T asked:

Marriage is a religious institution. Would you support eliminating it as a civic institution? Leave to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s?

Marriage isn’t necessarily a religious institution.

Marriage is not a religious institution. Just because you can get married in a church (which a lot of people choose not to) does not mean it’s a religious thing.

I’m an Atheist and one day, I might get married and not in a church. It has nothing to do with religion.

We pride ourself in the US of having separation of church and state but marriage in an area where the two do overlap a bit. While marriage occurs in a church it is also important to remember that it is a legal partnership as well which, if you get divorced, becomes painfully obvious. If the government said, “OK Poof! No more marriages”, the legal implications of two people living together over a period of time and accumulating assets and debts would still constitute a sharing of these responsibilities if they parted unless a contract existed otherwise. Basically it makes no difference if your legally married or just “together”.

Great idea! The problem is that is government would have to stop giving financial benefits exclusively to married people: joint income tax; social security to spouses; increased housing allowance to married soldiers etc.
